It was worse for Swofford and also the rest of his platoon, stationed
someplace inside the similar desert they had months of "hurry up and
wait". It's this that the film captures so properly: it is not
concerning the fighting within the Gulf war, but about the wait. It
really is about the males around the ground, like these cheap ralph lauren polo,
who went to fight a war, but in no way got the chance simply because
our overwhelming air energy destroyed the Iraqi army before they got the
opportunity to take a shot. That is a truly class coat created of real
wool and genuine bone buttons.
The film follows the standard war movie sequence and starts with
Swofford's simple instruction to develop into a "jarhead" so referred to
as because the "high and tight" severe haircuts favoured by the marines
make their heads look like jars. He meets his drill sergeant and starts
to think that joining the home
Corps might have been a poor choice. These scenes are disappointing,
like a watereddown version of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, as
the drill sergeant shouts out insults and punishments even though
walking up and down the barrack block.
However they soon enhance. There's a disturbing but truetolife scene
in which Swofford, played convincingly by Jake Gyllenhaal, and his
fellow marines are watching the "Ride of your Valkyries" scene from
Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. The marines are completely
absorbed, leaping up and down with excitement as the music plays plus
the helicopters fly in low to attack the Vietnamese village. Caught up
in the movie, they scream and chant for the villagers to obtain the
"good news" from the helicopter gunships.
